10 Tips for Healthy Skin

My Grandmother only used soap and water and she had beautiful skin!

I love this comment as it shows how amazing our skin can be at looking after itself! Why then do so many of us suffer with ‘not so great skin’ or have to use loads of products or trial and error so many different things to help our skin look and feel good?

Well, not knowing where Grandma is from or where she grew up, one thing is certain, our modern-day lifestyles generally contribute greatly to the health of our skin. Other factors that also can contribute are genetics, hormones, and diet.

So what can we do to have a healthy balanced skin today?

Maintaining a healthy balanced skin with our modern-day lifestyle involves several key practices that you can incorporate into your daily routine. Like most things, results come over time and from staying consistent. We hope these 10 tips help you with improving your skin health.

10 Tips for Healthy Skin

  1. Cleanse your skin AM and PM with a pH balanced cleanser that is right for your skin. This is often the most overlooked practice of any skincare routine but it’s the one that makes the biggest impact either for good or for bad. We educate on this a lot when we see people in our salon for the first time so if you are unsure about your cleanser, cleansing routine etc…. then come and see us. We can definitely help you with this!
  2. Moisturise! A hydrated skin is able to function much better naturally then a dehydrated skin. Think of your moisturiser like a big blanket, holding all of that hydration in so the skin feels safe and relaxed.
  3. Sun Protection. Look for broad-spectrum protection options that will protect your skin from both UVA and UVB. Apply daily even on cloudy days and in the winter months. UVB are the rays we can feel but UVA are the ones we cannot feel and they are present all year around from sun up to sun down. These rays are responsible for premature aging so if this is your concern, this is an important step in your daily routine.
  4. Stay Hydrated. Drinking water helps to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Hydration helps to improve your skin’s complexion and flush out toxins from the body.
  5. Eat a balanced diet. Where you can, go for the non-processed versions of food and whole foods. Fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats all work so much better with the way your body naturally functions. They are also a richer source of compounded essential vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and help protect the body from free radical damage.
  6. Get adequate sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Sleep allows your skin to repair and regenerate. This contributes to a healthy complexion and reduces the appearance of dark circles and puffiness under the eyes.
  7. Manage stress. More and more places of employment, these days, are incorporating ‘wellness programs’ and or are creating more flexible work environments to manage the well-being of their people. We are all now recognizing that chronic stress has a lot of negative effects not only on the mind and body but also impacts our society. Our focus in this article though is on skin health and in some cases, chronic stress can also cause skin issues such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. Even when you are not feeling overwhelmed and stressed, try practicing stress-reducing activities such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or have a healthy hobby. This will help maintain your inner well-being which will help you be in a better position to cope with stressful situations when they do arise. We don’t need stress showing up on our healthy skin so let’s try and prevent this one if possible.
  8. Exercise regularly. Physical activity improves blood circulation which nourishes skin cells and carries away toxins. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week to promote healthy skin.
  9. Limit alcohol and avoid smoking. Excess alcohol consumption and smoking can dehydrate the skin, deplete essential nutrients, and accelerate aging.
  10. Consult a Skin Specialist. If you have specific skin concerns or conditions then it’s always advisable to speak to a trained professional who can help you identify what is going on with your skin and offer suggestions and a treatment plan on what would work best for you. We are fortunate at Confidently Skin that we have a team of very experienced skin-focused therapists who would be more than happy to help you further with your skin.
